Job description: Exciting opportunity to join our well-established and growing nonprofit organization as a Staff Accountant – Cash & Asset Management!

In this vital role, the Staff Accountant is responsible for oversight of the general ledger, the monthly process and reconciliation of accounts and the review and maintenance of internal controls. Although a generalist supporting the general ledger, this position has primary responsibilities for portions of the balance sheet that will be assigned on an as needed basis.

The Staff Accountant will:

  • coordinate the general accounting functions and keeps the Accounting Manager/Supervisor informed on day to day general accounting operations, highlighting risks or concerns
  • prepare, report and post standard entries to the general ledger system in a timely and accurate manner
  • assist in the preparation of other monthly and year end entries, AP accruals
  • post monthly entries as required
  • support Accounting manager by managing month end close schedule to insure timely posting of journal entries
  • reviews monthly Trial Balance
  • monthly reconciliation of accounts – with primary responsibility for cash, fixed assets and depreciation, prepaids and other assets
  • maintain supporting schedules and documentation for general ledger accounts.
  • support other functions with general ledger downloads for posting and or reconciliation purposes, as well as taking time to train others on general ledger software
  • perform back up for Senior Accountant – Revenue
  • record daily cash transactions and prepares management cash report
  • reconcile bank statement in a timely manner
  • support cash flow schedules
  • assist in banking relations support when required
  • update lease schedules on a quarterly basis or as often as possible with monthly principle payments and interest payments
  • setup new loans and try to get lending institute to send an amortization schedule
  • at year end, calculate long term/short term debt on the balance sheet, and reconcile with banks mortgage statements
  • responsible for the management of the Prepaid accounts, insurance and other expense,, for timely recording of activity and reconciliation
  • support facilities in the tracking of insurance claims and payments
  • assist in the preparation for year-end audit schedules
  • participate as a staff member for Accounting/ IT related initiatives that improve the accounting systems within the department

Required Skills

  • Technical and professional accounting skills
  • Strong computer skills, including Excel, and Access database, preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, interpersonal, organizational and problem solving skills
  • Must be able to work effectively with others to help effectively resolve accounting related problems

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in finance or accounting required; MBA or CPA preferred
  • At least three years financial experience
