Your Opportunity

The Sr. Manager, Strategic Sourcing – Transportation and Warehousing is responsible for managing categories that are complex and volatile from a supply chain and cost management perspective. The individual in this position should have general business experience managing risk, a solid understanding of commodities and demonstrated capability to develop a holistic business strategy for assigned categories. The individual should drive and challenge the team to reach department and organizational targets and provide solid advice on all related markets and supply issues to leadership.

Core Responsibilities

  • Create, Champion, and Execute Strategies which allow for sustainable value to Smithfield in maximizing top and bottom-line growth.
  • Lead and direct a high performing team that manages multiple Logistics categories for Smithfield: Transportation (Rail, Dedicated, Full Truck load, Less than truckload, Intermodal, Parcel, etc.) Warehousing (All 3PL’s, warehousing, Real estate, pallets, MHE, Leases & Rentals, Spotting & shuttling, etc) and misc. other Logistics categories.
  • Responsible for the delivery of specific Cost Reduction and Cash Flow targets in alignment with overarching goals and objectives, with a focus on Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
  • Will interact closely with Key Stakeholders and Cross Functional Senior Leaders in the organization
  • Co-Develop and implement risk management strategies on longer term plans in demanding labor markets. Manage Commodity labor market volatility with timely effective buying strategies.
  • Manage Financial Planning and Budget setting as related to respective spend areas.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to develop and track long term strategy
  • Create consolidation opportunities by leveraging vendors network to simplify Smithfield’s network
  • Manage, Develop, and Coach direct reports and broader team to drive transformational results and to support individual career growth based on Smithfield’s ROI principles
  • Create and Champion Rituals & Routines to drive process and system efficiencies toward overall results in Cost, Quality, and Service.
  • Ensure Compliance on Procurement, Financial, and Company policies and reporting.
  • Visit various Supplier and Smithfield facilities to implement or identify new opportunities. Become involved with cross-functional meetings to assist the business units to identify cost savings opportunities.

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university and 8+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.
  • Minimum of 5+ years’ experience in a position of leadership to include team development and management, required.
  • Minimum of 5+ years’ experience in sourcing or supply chain related role, required.
  • Experience in Logistics Procurement or experience on or working with transportation teams, required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to effectively negotiate and influence business decisions and change.
  • Excel and SAP experience, preferred.
  • Proven problem solving and decision-making skills, strong negotiation, analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Office work environment with potential for up to 35% travel required
  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Provides leadership and direction to sourcing team.
