This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of the Lewis Cass Schools. This classroom teacher will serve students within the mild disabilities program at Lewis Cass Elementary School. The service model of Inclusion is utilized and is part of a team approach, working with general education teachers and classroom assistants to support students with disabilities ranging from age 3-5. The position will be effective for the 2022-2023 school year. The lucky candidate will be required to have excellent communication skills, be positive and focus on collaborating with intentional/research valid supports to serve our students promoting learning outcomes. The Special Education Teacher will provide special education services under the direction of our special education director, principal and early learning director.

Job Description

Instructs students in subject matter, utilizing strong pedagogical skills and Universal Design for Learning.

Prepares teaching outline for course of study, assigns lessons, and provides feedback to students.

Administers a variety of assessments to evaluate pupil’s progress, records results, and issues reports to inform parents of progress.

Maintains discipline in the classroom and in other school’s activities on and off school campus.

Uses curriculum maps, Content Connectors and statewide resources to prepare lessons, considering factors, such as individual needs, abilities, learning levels, and physical limitations of students. Plans for the variability in learners’ needs.

Discusses student’s academic and behavior problems with parents and administrators and suggests remedial action.

Participates in faculty and professional meetings, professional development experiences, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.

Maintains attendance and grade records.

Supervises students in hallways, cafeteria, and other areas of the building.

Effectively collaborates with teaching colleagues and administrators on best practices in teaching and learning.

Provides support and daily tracking of student health needs and safety is a top consideration at all times.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Participates in a community of learning with colleagues to foster growth and inclusion of students within the special education program.

Qualified Candidates will:

Understand Universal Design for Learning

Implement the students’ individualized IEP

Address student differentiated instruction/learner variability

Ability to work well with teachers, parents, and administrators in addressing IEP goals

Be licensed to work with special needs students, or be eligible to participate in the Transition to Teaching State Approved Program earning college coursework to be fully licensed in Special Education within 3 years of start date.

Complete IEP paperwork in accordance with Indiana Article 7

Supervise special education instructional assistants/paraprofessionals

Willingness to attend professional development opportunities

Assist in the implementation of behavior plans and behavioral strategies

Job Qualifications:

Hold or be eligible to hold a valid Indiana teacher’s license

Licensed in special education K-12 (REPA 3; Rules 2002 or 46-47; and/or Bulletin 400) or willingness to pursue licensing through the Transition to Teaching State Approved Program

Rated as effective or highly effective teacher preferred

Exemplary verbal and written communication skills

Proficient assistive technology skills

Ability to work independently and with colleagues

Self-driven and motivated

Organized

High energy – committed to teaching in collaboration with others

Can motivate students

Strong problem solver

Skilled at communicating with staff, students, and parents
