Job description: Overview

The Job in a Nutshell:

The New Item Specialist is responsible for managing, reviewing and processing new item submittals from new and existing suppliers. In coordination with Category Managers the New Item Specialist will ensure proper communication to suppliers and stores for approvals and denials as well as coordinate with the Marketing and Operations teams to promote new item introductions to maximize sales opportunities.

Responsibilities

Main Ingredients:

Management and review of new item submittals * Log all new submittals monthly for reporting and communication

  • Understand the company product quality standards and what we don’t carry and why
  • Review ingredients and documentation to ensure product(s) meet Natural Grocers quality standards or deny immediately, consult with Standards Manager when there are questions
  • Under guidance of Standard Manager, stay apprised of standards updates and incorporate in to process and review
  • Prepare samples for trial on products that do meet standards
  • Note feedback where appropriate for reporting and communication
  • Meet with Category Managers regularly to approve or deny product
  • Review trends in the category, category mix, pricing, differentiators
  • Develop an introduction timeline and plan for approvals

Management of new item processing * Understand and follow company guidelines on new product set up

  • Categories, Subcategories, Base Categories, Pricing, Margins, Brands, reference articles
  • Accurately prepare appropriate forms for submission to Accounting and Data Integrity Group
  • Vendor Forms or Vendor Portal for new vendors
  • New Item Form for Data Integrity
  • Send Summary of new items reviewed with any notes and approval or denial status to vendors and brokers
  • Coordinate with Category Manager(s), merchandising resources and marketing team roll out of new products and any print, media or social activities to support

Reporting * Each Month prepare and distribute sales and inventory reports for products that arrived in stores three months prior to track performance results of introduction plan

Although this is a general outline of job responsibilities all employees are expected to be “hands on” and do whatever it takes to get the job done and make the company thrive.

Qualifications

Recipe for Success:

  • 4 year degree in business preferred
  • 2 years of experience in a purchasing environment
  • Experience working in the Natural/Organic industry with a working knowledge of Organic standards, Non-GMO verification, GMPs and FDA labeling
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills along with strong cooperative relationship building and influencing skills are needed
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to analyze, summarize and present results
  • Experience with SAP ERP systems preferred
  • Must be extremely organized and have strong follow up skills.
  • Computer proficiency and technical aptitude with BOBJ, SAP, MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Access and Outlook are required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must have the ability to occasionally lift or carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must have the ability to occasionally push or pull up to 100 lbs.
  • Must be able to frequently use the computer for data entry and use of mouse.
  • Must be able to constantly sit for the duration of the work shift.
  • Must be able to frequently stand.
  • Must be able to occasionally walk, use fine motor manipulations, grip, squat, kneel, bend, twist, turn, crawl, climb, reach outward, and reach above chest as needed.

Environmental Requirements:

  • Must be able to work occasionally outside, cold, heat, wet, humid, sharp tools and equipment, noise, dust, fumes, and congested worksite.
