Job Description

The Information Technology Services (ITS) is responsible for the planning, design, implementation, reporting, inspection, and operation of BPHC’s business applications, network, hardware, and software.

INTERNSHIP PROJECT:

Data is foundational to public health. BPHC Informatics plays a critical role in the agency’s Data Modernization Initiative (DMI) to build a faster and seamless public health data infrastructure in the City of Boston. This appointment will be in the Informatics Department which is responsible for the oversight and coordination of the strategy for Informatics DMI activities to support data modernization efforts within BPHC and to support the City of Boston at the local levels. This Internship position is for at least 3 months with a flexible start time and can be set up remote, if circumstances require. You will be part of the Informatic team, where you will closely work within the team of Machine Learning engineers on a well-defined project that is focused, dependent on the candidate, around Deep Learning or Data Science. We are looking for a curious candidate with a background in Statistics, Data Science, and Computer Science who wants to have an impact on human health. You will learn from a diverse team of experts while being challenged with applied, real-world technical problems involving the development and implementation of state-of-the-art algorithms and the analyses of large datasets.

INTERNSHIP LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The applicant selected will gain experience in the systematic application of knowledge about systems that capture, manage, analyze and use the information to improve population health and provide applied public health informatics training to apply computer science and information technology to public health problems. You will learn from a diverse team of experts while being challenged with applied, real-world technical problems involving the development and implementation of state-of-the-art algorithms and the analyses of large datasets.

Learning objectives include:

  • Providing informatics assistance to bureaus, programs, and public health service center departments.
  • Collaborating with teams involved in the research and development of public health data and surveillance systems.
  • Conducting evaluations on complex public health information systems.
  • Assisting in public health informatics projects.
  • Developing, managing, and evaluating complex information systems.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate, Graduate, Post-Graduate
  • Candidates must be degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled at an accredited college or university
  • Candidates must be taking at least 6 credit hours and have an overall cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Ability to work in collaboration with a diverse group of scientists and technical staff, and to communicate effectively
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
