Hiring Range: $41,131.27 – $51,415.73 (DOQ)

Under general supervision, enforce compliance with city ordinances and building codes; perform both routine and complex inspections of structures, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems; assist in the review of building plans; provide professional, effective and efficient public service assistance to the general public; and perform other duties as assigned.


This is the entry/journey level class in the Building Inspector series. Employees at this level receive general supervision from the Building and Development Director and may receive work direction from the Senior Building Inspector(s).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review permit applications and construction plans for compliance with building codes and city ordinances.
  • Enforce all applicable provisions of the International Building, Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical Codes as adopted and amended by local ordinances.
  • Perform field inspections of industrial, commercial and residential buildings during various stages of construction and remodeling to assure conformance with applicable building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical codes.
  • Inspect foundations, concrete, framing, plastering, and a large variety of other complex and routine structural building elements.
  • Examine grade, quality, and treatment of lumber, steel, roofing materials, electrical system components; plumbing fixtures, mechanical systems, and related building elements to secure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances; review quality of installation and workmanship.
  • Inspect plumbing installations in complex commercial and industrial construction; inspect residential plumbing systems; assure proper installation and function.
  • Inspect complex and simple electrical installations; ensure safety of electrical construction; review quality of materials and workmanship.
  • Inspect residential and commercial mechanical, heating, and air conditioning systems.
  • Issue building permits; make field reviews of building plans and specifications; recommend issuance of certificates of occupancy.
  • Conduct follow up inspections as necessary to assure conformance; suspend construction as necessary.
  • Confer with architects, contractors, builders, property owners and the general public, both in the field and in the office; explain and interpret code provisions and local building regulations and requirements; respond to citizen inquiries and complaints.
  • Complete and maintain a variety of records, reports, documents, and correspondence relating to inspection activity.
  • Assist those contacted in the course of duty in an effective, efficient and professional manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Education, Training and Experience: High School diploma or GED equivalent; experience in construction or the inspection of construction is preferred.

When driving is a requirement of the classification: A valid State driver license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

Special Requirements: Ability to obtain a Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners Plumbing Inspector License within 2 years of employment.

Expected salary: $41131.27 – 51415.73 per year
